The Man Who Baptised a Nation

Baptism originates from the Greek word bapto meaning to cover wholly with fluid
In Acts 19 Verse 2-6, Paul the Apostle makes the point that their previous baptism by John the Baptist was of no further relevance in God's plan. This is why Paul baptised them again, even though when John baptised them, he said they were to believe in Christ Jesus. Why is this so? The answer can be found if we look at God's relationship with his people, Israel. In Jeremiah 3 Verse 8, God gives Israel, His spiritual wife, a bill or law of divorce due to idolatry and chasing after false gods. However, if they acknowledge their iniquities and turn back to the Lord, He would again be married to them. Reading Romans 7 Versus 1 to 4, clearly shows that this remarriage, could not take place, without the death of the husband. In Matthew 3 Verses 1 to 5, John the Baptist starts preaching in the wilderness. He preached to the lost sheep of Israel, Judah included, as did Jesus and his disciples. See Matthew 10 - Verse 6 and Matthew 15 Verse 24. As he preached all Jerusalem all Judea and all the region round about, this being representative of all Israel, (The Twelve Tribes), were baptised by John, confessing their sins. Mark 1 Verse 5 "and there went unto him all the land of Judea and they of Jerusalem, and were all baptised of him in the river Jordan confessing their sins." Luke 1 Verse 17 "And he (John) shall go before him in the spirit and power of Elias to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just; to make ready a people prepared for the Lord." These people could not possibly be those who were to born again, because Paul in Acts 19 Verse 5 re-baptised those who had been baptised by John so they could receive The Holy Spirit. The reasons and benefits to Israel acquired by John's baptism are found later in Luke 1 Verses 68 to 71. Mark 2 Verses 19 to 20, show by whom and how it was to happen. Mark 2 Verse 19 "Can the children of the Bride chamber (the disciples) fast, while the bridegroom is with them?" No! Children of the Bride chamber help prepare the bride, the disciples did this by baptising more people than John. See John 4 Verse 1 and 2. Jesus the bridegroom (was a man about to be married). His bride, Israel had acknowledged her iniquities and turned to the Lord, being made ready by John the Baptist and the disciples. Luke 1 Verse 17 "A people prepared for the Lord", but before the marriage could take place the death of the original husband was required. Colossians 2 Verse 9 tells us Jesus is the fullness of the Godhead bodily. When Jesus was crucified he was crucified as that fullness. Upon the resurrection, he became Israel's rightful husband and King of Kings, fulfilling all the law, including that pointed out by Paul in Romans 7 Verses 1 to 4. The cross, above the crown, found in every courthouse in the Commonwealth, shows His ultimate authority as head of the wife or nation, see Ephesians 5 Verse 23. Further, He became saviour of the Body of Christ, this is also found in Ephesians 5 Verse 23. The Body of Christ, being those who repent and are baptised into the name of Jesus Christ, receiving the gift of salvation by the Holy Ghost. Titus 3 Verse 5 "Not by works of rightousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost". This is why Paul had to baptise them again, because John's baptism was for the preparation of the reunion of God and Israel. So the Bible, through this new union, in the times and seasons of The Father (see Acts 1 Verses 6 to 7) could be spread by his people, reformed Israel, to the four quarters of the earth. So all flesh, regardless of race, creed or colour could receive the Spirit of God and become His children. Henceforth the children were born after the marriage, and they are not illegitimate.

Jesus declared John as the greatest prophet born of woman and yet disciples he had baptised, that moved to Ephesus were baptised again by Paul. After Johns ministry, baptism had to be done by a person who is filled with the Holy Spirit. We can all enjoy the blessing and freedoms Christ has brought to pass in our nation. However to be saved we need to be baptised with the expectation of receiving the Holy Spirit speaking in tongues. Religion without this grace experience at best falls short, at worst is a total deception. See 2 Corinthians 11 Verse 13 to 15.

Many are called and few are chosen. The Friends in Christ Ministry emplore all to obey the directives of Jesus. Immersion baptism is a Bible commandment see Acts 10 Verses 46 to 48 and Jesus said believers would speak in tongues.

Have you been baptised, by a Spirit filled person who preaches the truth? This is the Bible way, the right way. When you take that step of faith, God will honour his promise, and wonderfully fill you with the Holy Spirit. God Bless.
